Boys Varsity Basketball ends season with 48-45 loss in MHSAA District play; Andrew Turnquist sets single season scoring record

Eagles Lose: 45 - 48
Last Wednesday, the Boys Varsity Basketball team's effort to move forward in District action fell short as the Eagles lost to Milford, 48-45. Owen Mladenoff led the Eagles with 12 points, Andrew Turnquist contributed 11 points and 9 rebounds, Nsikan Usen added 10 and JT Wheeler had 7 points and 4 assists while not turning the ball over.  We finished the season 13-11.  In the game, Andrew Turnquist passed Gary Gleason's (1980) single season scoring record of 493 points, Turnquist finished with 504 for the season.  We would like to thank our seniors Jacob Ansorge, Caiden Glennie, Owen Mladenoff, Andrew Turnquist, Nsima Usen and JT Wheeler for a great 4 years and you will be greatly missed.

Eagles Win: 65 - 45
Last Monday, the Boys Varsity Basketball team opened up MHSAA District play with 65-45 win over Walled Lake Northern.  Andrew Turnquist had a monster game with 32 points 14 Rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks.  Nsikan Usen had 8 points, 14 rebounds, 4 assists, Cole Bromley chipped in 11 points on 3-4 shooting from three and Owen Mladenoff 7 points 4 assists and lock down defense.

Last Thursday, the Boys Varsity Basketball team lost a heartbreaker at Walled Lake Northern, 48-47. Nsikan Usen filled the stat sheet with 8 points, 8 rebounds, 5 blocks, 3 steals and 3 assists.  Andrew Turnquist had a big double double of 16 points and 15 rebounds. Owen Mladenoff also had 8 points and 8 rebounds and JT wheeler had 4 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds. Lakeland finishes the regular season 12-10 (9-7 LVC) and now enters districts at Milford with a first round game on Monday 3/6 against Walled Lake Northern.

On Tuesday, February 28th, the Boys Varsity Basketball team lost a tough game at Waterford Mott, 59-50. The Eagles were led by Andrew Turnquist's 28 points and 9 Rebounds.  Nsikan Usen chipped in 9 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists and Owen Mladenoff had 6 points and 7 rebounds.

Eagles Win: 64 - 28
Tuesday, the Boys Varsity Basketball team defeated Waterford Kettering, 64-28.  It was a complete team victory, with every player on the roster seeing action and 10 of them scoring.  Andrew Turnquist (18 pts), Nsikan Usen (11 pts), and Owen Mladenoff (9 pts) led the way for the hot-shooting Eagles.  Also chipping in were Cole Bromley (8 pts), Jacob Ansorge (5 pts), and Zach Reppuhn (4 pts).

Eagles Win: 47 - 43
  The Boys Varsity Basketball team showed that it has learned from previous games this season, fighting back from a 9-point deficit in the 2nd half to earn a come-from-behind road victory against Avondale, winning 47-43. Andrew Turnquist and Nsikan Usen were forces in the paint, scoring a combined 38 points and grabbing 21 rebounds between them. But it was the Eagles’ resolve on defense that enabled the team to earn the victory. Lakeland held Avondale to 3 points in the final 8 minutes of the game, limiting their opponent to one difficult shot on most possessions.  That grit and defensive intensity, especially in the second half of games, has been a trademark of the team for a good part of the season. The team gets right back on the court tonight as it hosts Waterford Kettering as part of Lakeland’s final home double-header showcase event with the Girls Varsity team.  The Girls will tip off at 5:30 and the Boys will tip off around 7:00pm.

Eagles Win: 67 - 63
  Tuesday, the Boys Varsity Basketball team defeated South Lyon, 67-63. It was a game filled with offensive fireworks early on, and the scoring continued til the very end. Andrew Turnquist led Lakeland with 27 points.  Nsikan Usen had 13 points, while Owen Mladenoff added 12 points. JT Wheeler had 6 points and 8 assists for the Eagles. The team improved to 10-7 for the season, 8-4 in the LVC.  Lakeland will play at Avondale this Monday, and then host Waterford Kettering on Tuesday (game postponed from Thursday).

Eagles Win: 42 - 37
  Tuesday, the Varsity Boys Basketball team grinded out a big win against Waterford Mott, defeating the Corsairs in a physical and defensive battle, 42-37.  Double-double machine Andrew Turnquist scored 29 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the effort. Nsikan Usen provided great energy on both ends, contributing 7 points. Meanwhile, Owen Mladenoff continues to be a defensive stalwart, locking up the opponent’s leading scorer for most of the game. With the win, the Eagles continue to have a say in the outcome of the LVC race, currently standing in 2nd place with two other teams.  They’ll have a chance to strengthen their position on Friday as part of the Rivalry Showcase double-header at home versus Milford.

Friday, the Boys Varsity Basketball team found itself in yet another game that came down to final second heroics; unfortunately, this time the Eagles were on the losing end, falling to Walled Lake Western, 56-51 in overtime.   Up three in the final 30 seconds of the game, Lakeland fell victim to another clutch 3-pointer by its opponent, thus forcing overtime.  In OT, WLW was able to grab the early lead, and due in part to some clutch free throws, the visiting team secured the win. Andrew Turnquist paced Lakeland with 27 points and 18 rebounds.  Nskan Usen had 5 points, 8 assists, and 7 rebounds, while Owen Mladenoff added 7 points.   Lakeland is now 7-5 overall, 5-2 (2nd place) in the LVC.  The Eagles host first place South Lyon East on Tuesday.

Last Tuesday, the Boys Varsity Basketball team renewed its rivalry with Bogie Lake Rd. neighbor Walled Lake Northern, and as usual, the game lived up to all of the rivalry expectations, with the Eagles ultimately winning 57-51 in an overtime thriller. The Knights, down 3 points, forced the overtime period by knocking down a 3-pointer in the last 10 seconds of regulation. But, despite the dagger moment, the Eagles responded in overtime to snag the win. Andrew Turnquist had 27 points and 15 rebounds to lead Lakeland.  JT Wheeler and Cole Bromley each contributed 10 points. With the win, Lakeland moved to 7-4 on the season, 5-1 in the LVC.

On January 17th, the Boys Varsity Basketball team recovered from an awful start to salvage a road win at South Lyon.  The Eagles trailed 24-3 in the game, but rallied back to steal the win, 47-41. Andrew Turnquist had a monster game, scoring 30 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.  JT Wheeler was an important weapon on the defensive side of the court, and Owen Mladenoff (5 points) and Cole Bromley (4 points) were key on both sides of the ball. The win moved Lakeland to 6-4 overall and 4-1 in the LVC.

Friday, the Boys Varsity Basketball team found itself finally on the winning side of a close game, going into Milford's field house and defeating the cross-town rivals in the final 30 seconds of the game, 35-33. Andrew Turnquist had 14 points and 11 rebounds, while JT Wheeler added 12 points and 3 assists.  Owen Mladenoff was a selfless teammate who dedicated himself to giving the team his best defensive effort. It was a solid team win in front of an enthusiastic and spirted Blue Crew. Lakeland moves to 5-4 on the season, 3-1 in the LVC.  The Eagles return to the court on Tuesday with an away game at South Lyon.

Tuesday, the Boys Varsity Basketball team played in a high-scoring game at South Lyon East, falling just short and losing 64-60.  Andrew Turnquist had a monster game of 30 points and 17 rebounds, while Nsikan Usen added 12 points and JT Wheeler scored 9 points.  Lakeland’s record stands at 4-4 overall for the season. This Friday, all 3 Boys teams and both Girls teams travel to Milford for a huge series of games against the crosstown rival. Should be an intense night of basketball, and the Blue Crew is encouraged to show up in force.  Girls Varsity plays at 5:30 followed by the Boys Varsity.

  Wednesday, the Boys Varsity Basketball team played an exciting game against Holly, one that ended up in overtime with Holly prevailing, 67-54.  Nsikan Usen had 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Eagles. Owen Mladenoff and Cole Bromley both chipped in 11 points, while JT Wheeler played a great floor game against multiple defenses.  Lakeland moves to 4-2 on the season, returning to the court on Friday for a home game against Clarkston.

Tuesday, the Boys Varsity Basketball team suffered its first loss of the season to a very good Davison team, 57-42. The Eagles were led by Andrew Turnquist's 27 points and 15 rebounds. JT Wheeler chipped in with 6 points 5 rebounds and Drew Carlson came off the bench to grab 6 rebounds. Lakeland falls to 4-1 (2-0 LVC). The Varsity's next game is at the Round ball Classic next Wednesday in Ferndale.

The Boys Varsity Basketball team defeated Waterford Kettering 56-31 on Friday night, moving the Eagles' overall record to 4-0 for the season, 2-0 in the LVC. Andrew Turnquist had 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 blocks.  JT Wheeler added 10 points.  Owen Mladenoff Nsikan Usen led the defensive effort, combining for 9 deflections, 4 steals, and 3 blocks. The team will host Davison this upcoming Tuesday.  Tip-off is at 7pm.

Monday, the Varsity Boys Basketball team moved to 3-0 on the season with a 49-36 win over Northville in its home opener. Andrew Turnquist had a 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks stat line. Nsikan Usen added 8 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Sophomore Cole Bromley chipped in 7 points and 7 rebounds as well.

Eagles Win: 45 - 30
Friday, the Boys Varsity Basketball team moved to 2-0 on the season with a defensive-led 45-30 win at Walled Lake Central. Lakeland was led by Andrew Turnquist's 26 points and 10 rebounds.  Nsikan Usen contributed 9 points and 10 rebounds and Cole Bromley came off the bench to provide great defense and 9 rebounds of his own.  Lakeland outrebounded Central 50-27.  The Eagles host Northville on 12/12 for a triple header with freshman starting at 4, JV at 5:30 and Varsity at 7 PM.  Please come out to support the guys in their home opener.

Tuesday, the Varsity Boys Basketball team opened its 2022-2023 campaign by defeating Hartland, coming back in the 4th quarter for a 52-49 win.  Andrew Turnquist scored 22 points, while Sikan Usen added 15 points and 11 rebounds.  Next up…a Girls-Boys Doubleheader at Walled Lake Central this Friday.
