Water Polo clinics available for interested student-athletes
If you are unaware, Huron Valley student-athletes have the opportunity to compete in water polo as part of a co-op program with Walled Lake. While the Boys season has passed, the Girls season is this upcoming spring.Boys or Girls interested in participating either this upcoming spring or next fall are invited to attend several clinics taking place soon. The first one is actually this Saturday, December 7th.Check out the flyer for information and a QR code.

Recently, the Girls and Boys Cross Country teams earned Academic All-State recognition.The Girls team ranked #2 in the state, posting a 3.985 GPA, just one thousandth of a point behind the #1 team. Last Sunday, November 10th, a number of Lakeland student-athletes who are involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes volunteered their time to support the Operation Christmas Child packing event held at Thrive Church in Highland. Eagles helped to fill boxes with everyday essentials, as well as gifts for children; the boxes will be sent all around the world this holiday season.

Great news to report from the Boyne Highlands Heather Golf Course: McCoy Biagioli, Class of 2023, just won the 113th Michigan Amateur Championship, defeating Jimmy Dales (Northville) 3 & 1. Because of his victory, McCoy now receives an automatic invitation to compete in the U.S. Amateur Championship which will be played at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota, August 12-18. Previous winners of that event include some names you might recognize: Arnold Palmer, Jack Nickalus, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, and Bryson DeChambeau who just won his 2nd U.S. Open in dramatic fashion last weekend. Last Wednesday, May 1st, Lakeland High School and the Lakeland Athletic Department celebrated 14 student-athletes who have committed to continue their playing days at the collegiate level. During a ceremony held on campus, each honoree had the opportunity to announce their plans and share some thoughts about the experience. In addition, numerous coaches were on hand to discuss the attributes of these accomplished individuals. Congratulations to these 14 Class of 2024 student-athletes for their contributions to Lakeland Athletics, and for their success in finding an avenue to continue their careers in the future. Both the Huron Valley United Boys and Girls Swim and Dive teams matched their success in the pool this season with excellence in the classroom this school year. The Girls Swim and Dive team earned MISCA Team Academic All State with the 3rd highest team GPA in Division 1. The Boys Swim and Dive team moved up a spot from their 2nd place finish last season, earning MISCA Team Academic All State Honors with the best team GPA in Division 1! This is the first top finish for any Boys or Girls Swim and Dive team in district history. Both teams had the 4th highest GPA in the state, across all divisions, while each extending their team Academic All State streak to 4 straight seasons. At the National Level, the Girls Swim and Dive team earned NISCA National Scholar Team Gold award, while the Boys team earned the NISCA National Scholar Team Silver Award. Good news from the LHS Football Program!!! It was announced this week that the Lakeland Football Team was awarded Academic All-State Honors for the second consecutive year. This means the Eagles are one of the top FOUR teams in Division 2 across the state. Additionally, SEVEN student-athletes earned individual Academic All-State Honors (only seniors are eligible). The 2023 Football Program is selling Battle at the Big House VI Shirts for the game at the University of Michigan on August 24 at 3:30pm against South Lyon East. Shirts are $20 each and Hoodies are $35. By pre-ordering your shirt will be guaranteed. A limited amount of extra shirts will be sold on a first-come first-served basis. Shirts can be paid with cash or check made out to LHS Football. All pre orders MUST be completed by Sunday, 8/13. Varsity Hockey falls behind early, loses to Lakes Area United, 5-3
Boys Varsity Ice HockeyOn Saturday, November 23rd, the Varsity Hockey team suffered its first loss of the season against a solid Lakes Area United team (Kettering, Mott and West Bloomfield athletes). LA took advantage of Eagles defensive lapses to put up three goals in the first period on sophomore goalie Hunter Bennett. 0-3 Lakes after one. Senior Jacob Grant put the Eagles on the board in the second period with a one-time clapper from the high slot (assist to Killian Voorhies). Lakes Area would answer after Lakeland hit another defensive snooze button. 1-4 Lakes after two. In the third, the Eagles mustered a single tally thanks to Captain Carter Sutton's neutral zone steal and slash to the net. Lakes would score a fifth goal for a yawning 5-3 win. Boys Varsity Ice HockeyOn Saturday, November 16th, the Varsity Hockey team went up against the Sault Blue Devils for a marquis match-up. The Eagles were looking to avenge a 4-1 prior season loss against the gritty Devils. The Soo had something else in mind. Sophomore Hunter Bennett got the nod between the pipes for his first start and the Eagles first big test of the season. The teams traded shots and puck possession early in the game but both goalies held firm. Boys Varsity Ice HockeyOn Friday, November 15th, the Varsity Hockey team's annual season opener vs. Big Rapids kicked off five hours due north of White Lake at the Soo Showcase. Early in the first period, junior Nate Dell wasted no time netting the first goal of the season with a blinding snap shot from the blue line. Senior Captain Bryce Martin found junior Austin Scanlon who put the Eagles up by 2 in what would prove to be the game winner. Girls Varsity SwimmingThursday, November 14th, the Huron Valley United Girls Swim & Dive team had 4 divers compete in the MHSAA Regional vying for a chance to compete in the MHSAA State Meet. After all the dives were completed, Lola Beer and Kennedy Foote finished among the top 14; as a result, both will be returning to the State Meet.Lola, who placed 11th at the State Meet last year, took 7th at this year's Regional competition. Kennedy, who qualified for the State Meet but did not make it to the final dives, rallied on her last dive at this year's Regional to place 12th.Leah Huntoon made it to the final round of dives, finishing 18th overall. Mallory McArthur also competed.Lola and Kennedy will join a number of swimmers at the State Meet next weekend at the Holland Aquatic Center. Girls Varsity VolleyballThursday, November 7th, the Girls Varsity Volleyball team played South Lyon in the MHSAA District Final. It was a classic battle between two teams looking to extend their seasons as the match went the full five sets. In the end, it was South Lyon that prevailed, winning 3 sets to 2.In the first set, South Lyon played mistake-free ball on its way to winning 25-18. Lakeland responded, improving its performance and rallying from several points down as Payton Nelson served the Eagles to a 26-24 win. South Lyon took the third set 25-21, forcing the Eagles to rally again. In the fourth set, Lakeland was up 14-13 when Bridget Boughton went to the service line; 10 serves later, the Eagles were up 24-13, eventually winning 25-14. In the fifth and final set, South Lyon jumped out to an early 5-1 lead, and the Eagles were never really able to narrow the gap as the Lions went on to a 15-4 win.

It was a classic "tale of two halves" game, and the visiting team had the better half, as Farmington defeated Lakeland, 39-13.The Eagles scored first on a long TD run by Carter Travis in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Jake Dobrin scraped a 38-yard kick over the crossbar for a field goal, giving Lakeland a 10-0 lead it would take into halftime.But, the 2nd half was virtually all Farmington, as the visiting Falcons outscored the Eagles 39-3. Girls Varsity Cross CountryYesterday, the Girls Cross Country team competed in the MHSAA State Meet, having earned a trip to the finals by winning the MHSAA Regional last week. The Eagles finished 17th out of 29 teams, improving on last year's 19th place finish.The highlight was senior Ava Alicandro's new personal record time of 18:07.1, a time which put her in 21st place in the race. For that finish, Ava earned All-State honors in her final competition.Sophomore Morgan Scally also set a new PR at 19:31.4, crossing the line in 109th place. Sophomores Maya Pletzer (19:40. and Genevieve Connolly (20:09.9), and senior Alena Tiernan (20:14.3) were the other Eagles who contributed to the official score. Boys Varsity Cross CountryThis afternoon, the Boys Cross Country team placed 9th overall in the MHSAA State Meet held at Michigan International Speedway. Of Lakeland's seven runners, six set new personal bests in the race and the other had his 2nd-fastest time ever. The Eagles certainly rose to the occasion, peaking at the right time.Junior Gavin Johns finished 50th overall with a new PR of 16:03.3. Senior Jacob Kosidlo was right behind him, finishing 53rd at 16:04. Seniors Matt Verellen (69th, 16:09), Ayden McDonald (73rd, 16:11.3), and Michael Nivala (131st, 16:32.9) rounded out the official scoring for Lakeland. Senior Madeline Augustyn finished 8th with a season's best of 21:50.8. Boys Varsity FootballFriday, October 25th, the Varsity Football team traveled to Milford for its annual clash with its in-district rival. Both teams were 6-2 heading into the game, and both had essentially already qualified for the MHSAA State Playoffs; still, the game was as important as any other game in the season.Unfortunately for the Eagles, a host of turnovers proved to be too much to overcome, and despite several valiant comeback efforts, Lakeland lost 35-29. Girls Varsity Cross CountryThis morning, the Girls and Boys Cross Country teams decided that both teams winning Regionals last year was not enough, as the runners on both teams repeated the feat, again bringing home two Regional trophies today.Competing in the MHSAA Region 7-1 event in Royal Oak, the Girls team rallied in the late stages of the race to pull past Novi and Milford to claim victory. The Boys team held off Milford and Detroit Catholic Central in taking first place. TIn the Girls race, senior Ava Alicandro placed 2nd overall to lead the Eagles. Morgan Scally finished 11th, and then the pack of Alena Tiernan, Genevieve Connolly, and Sam Horton crossed together in 15th-17th place, securing the win for Lakeland. Senior Ava Alicandro crossed the line in first place to lead the Eagles; she and four of her teammates earned All-Conference honors for the efforts. Boys Varsity FootballFriday night, the Varsity Football team defeated Walled Lake Northern, 35-6. With the win, the Eagles accomplished a couple things: first, they retained possession of the Battle of Bogie Lake trophy; and second, and more importantly, the earned an automatic playoff bid by securing their 6th win of the season.The team also recognized its Senior Class prior to the game, a ceremony that included a moment of honor for #14 Joe Paduchowski, a teammate who tragically passed away earlier this year. The always supportive Blue Crew donned green for the night to show its support, and the visiting Knights also wore green.The Eagles will conclude the season with another rivalry game, this time with its in-district foe. Boys Varsity Cross CountryThursday, October 17th, the Boys Cross Country team competed in the LVC Championship Meet at Hess Hathaway Park, running against the other eight schools that they already defeated in dual meets earlier in the season.
