Yesterday, the Girls Cross Country team competed in the MHSAA State Finals. In a race filled with some exceptional teams, the Eagles finished 19th out of 28 schools. Junior Ava Alicandro paced the Eagles by finishing 26th out all runners (19th among runners in the team competition) in a time of 18:36.3. As a top-30 finisher, Ava earned All-State honors. Following Ava across the finish line were Alena Tiernan, Maya Pletzer, Morgan Scally, Mackenzie Hendry, Natalie Joiner, and Genevieve Connolly. For the first time in school history, the Girls Cross Country team earned a MHSAA Regional Championship by placing 1st at the Regional Meet held last Friday. In addition, junior Ava Alicandro placed 1st as an individual. Also finishing as Regional Medalists were Alena Tiernan and Maya Pletzer. The team moves on to the State Finals on Saturday. After finishing the regular season as LVC Conference Champions (8-0 in dual meets), the Girls Cross Country team competed in the LVC Championship Meet on Thursday. In a very tight Varsity race among the top three teams, Lakeland came in 2nd place. Three Lakeland runners were All-Conference: Ava Alicandro (2nd), Maya Pletzer (7th), and Alena Tiernan (10th). 1. Last Tuesday, the Girls XC team completed an undefeated (8-0) Lakes Valley Conference regular season championship with wins over Milford (25-30) and Waterford Mott (15-49). In dual meets, the whole team runs and the top seven finishers (Varsity) for a team are scored. If a JV race were hypothetically scored for the runners beyond Varsity, Lakeland would have swept the top 6 JV spots against Milford and Mott. The whole team has had a great season. The Girls Cross Country team placed 3rd out of 35 teams at Saturday's Oakland County Cross Country Championship. This is the highest finish for the Eagles in recent history (and possibly all of school history). Ava Alicandro, Alena Tiernan, and Maya Pletzer were medalists. Last Wednesday, the Girls Cross Country team moved to 6-0 in the LVC by beating WL Central (20-41) and Waterford Kettering (15-50). The team's final LVC dual meet is Tuesday, Oct. 10th against Milford and Waterford Mott.

This weekend, the Girls Cross Country team competed in the Shepherd Invite, and the team continues to produce excellent results. The Varsity squad, though missing a runner, finished 7th out of 34 large schools. The JV squad placed 6th out of 32 teams. A week after Ava Alicandro became the 3rd fastest LHS runner (in nearly 50 years of teams), Alena Tiernan became the 9th fastest and Maya Pletzer became the 12th fastest ever. Alena ran a 19:09 and Maya ran a 19:18. Madeline Augustyn and Belle Verellen became the latest girls to run a Varsity-letter-earning time this year. So far, the team has 10 girls who have beaten the 22:00 Varsity letter goal (including Alicandro, Tiernan, Pletzer, Joiner, Hendry, Scally, Connolly, Sievert, Verellen, and Augustyn) Many girls ran their personal record (PR). Saturday, the Girls Varsity Cross Country team raced in a loaded field at the Jackson Invitational, placing 7th out of 29 teams. The teams in the race included 10 of the top 21 ranked Division 1 schools in Michigan. Ava Alicandro became the 3rd fastest Lakeland runner ever in a time of 18:28. Almost everyone on the team ran a personal best time. The Girls XC team improved to 4-0 in the Lakes Valley Conference last evening with wins over Walled Lake Western 25-34 and South Lyon East 19-42. After a few years of coming up short against a very talented Walled Lake Northern team, the Lakeland ladies won the dual meet yesterday by a score of 28-29.  In addition, the ladies beat South Lyon by a score of 23-36.  Their conference record is now 2-0.    Top finishers for the team were: Ava Alicandro - 1st Alena Tiernan - 5th Natalie Joiner - 7th Maya Pletzer - 8th Kenzie Hendry - 15th Morgan Scally - 17th Jenna Sievert - 21st

This weekend, the Girls Cross Country team made its annual trip Up North to participate in the Charlevoix Mud Run. The Eagles made the most of the road trip, taking first place in the event with 7 runners placing in the top-13 overall. Junior Ava Alicandro finished 2nd overall with a time of 19:23.3. Teammate and fellow junior Alena Tiernan finished 3rd, while freshman Maya Pletzer took 5th. Breslin Scott (10th) and Mackenzie Hendry (11th) rounded out the scoring for Lakeland.
