Alex Broadwater finishes 4th at MHSAA Diving finals; HVU Boys Swim & Dive takes 27 out of 45 teams

Last Friday and Saturday, the Huron Valley United Boys Swim and Dive team traveled to Calvin University to compete in the MHSAA Division 1 State Finals. Senior Mason Brow kicked off the teams events with a personal best time of 22.20 in the 50 Freestyle to place 23rd overall. Sophomore Brendan Marshall also swam a personal best time of 54.08 to TIE for 16th place in the 100 Butterfly, requiring a tie breaking swim-off at the end of the prelim session. Marshall swam even faster in the head to head race, but his time of 53.71 was just a few hundredths behind his competitor placing him 17th overall at the meet. Marshall and Brow were joined by freshman Layton Armstrong and Tommy Shaw on the 400 Freestyle Relay Team, where the quartet dropped a second off their seed time to move up from 26th to 19th Place. IA West Senior Alex Broadwater was the team's lone finalist, competing in the 1 meter diving competition. After pacing the field in 1st place through 3 rounds of the 11 round competition, he faced a setback in the 4th round with his first failed dive of the season, dropping him all the way from 1st to 16th. Not to be deterred, Broadwater showed why he is among the elite divers in Michigan, climbing up all the way from 16th place to finish 4th overall earning all state honors. He will continue his diving career at the University of Michigan next fall. The team scored 15 points and placed 27th out of the 45 teams with qualifying athletes

Boys Swim & Dive LVC Conference Results: South Lyon United- 644 Walled Lake Northern- 361 Huron Valley- 315 Walled Lake United- 235 Waterford United- 159 The Boys Swim and Dive team finished off their regular season at the LVC Finals this past weekend, taking 3rd overall to finish 2nd in the conference, when combined with their 3-1 dual meet record. Senior Mason Brow got his hand on the wall first in the 50 Freestyle, stopping the clock at 22.25 seconds, a personal best and state qualifying time. Brow was also a conference runner up in the 100 Freestyle and earned the maximum 4 All LVC Honors while tying the team record for the most points scored at the championship meet with 57 points. Sophomore Brendan Marshall also joined in on the action by finishing second in the 200 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly, stopping the clock in the latter event in a personal best and state qualifying time of 54.27 seconds. Brow and Marshall were joined by freshman Layton Armstrong and Tommy Shaw to bring home the first ever conference relay win in district history, winning the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:31.50. The quartet closed out the meet with a second relay win in the 400 Freestyle, where the combination of Marshall (49.12), Brow (50.19), Armstrong (51.36) and Shaw (51.09) touched for a total time of 3:21.79 which qualifies them for the State Finals. Marshall's lead off swim was also an individual state qualifying time. All three of the team's divers, senior Alex Broadwater (2nd), freshman Jacob Belliston (3rd) and junior Skylar Jess-Isenegger (5th) qualified for the diving regional competition this thursday where they will compete for a trip to the state finals, Friday 3/10 and Saturday 3/11 @ Calvin University. Last Friday and Saturday, the Huron Valley United Boys Swim and Dive team took to the boards and blocks at Royal Oak Middle school for the Oakland County Championships. The team produced 8 personal best performances and 4 individual scorers, the latter total being the most ever for a boys team in district history. Overall, the team placed 15th out of 31 teams. IA West senior Alex Broadwater brought home a medal for his 3rd Place overall finish in Friday's Diving competition, and was supported by Milford junior Skylar Jess-Isenegger who also finished in a scoring position in 16th place. In Saturday's swimming events, Milford senior Mason Brow took 10th in the 50 Freestyle while Milford sophomore Brendan Marshall took 15th in the 100 Freestyle. Brow, Marshall and Broadwater teamed up with freshman Layton Armstrong to place 13th in the 200 Freestyle Relay. Marshall, Brow and Armstrong were then joined by freshman Tommy Shaw as the quartet closed out the meet with a season best time in the 400 Free Relay to place 11th. The team takes its 3-0 LVC record into a senior night matchup vs 3-0 South Lyon this Thursday @ Milford HS before traveling to Jenison HS for the MISCA Invitational on Saturday

Last Thursday, the Huron Valley United Boys Swim & Dive team competed in a Double Dual Meet, and the student-athletes proved to be victorious in both match-ups. Vs Waterford Huron Valley 109 Waterford 45 Vs Walled Lake Northern Huron Valley 94 WLN 91 This past Thursday the Boys Swim and Dive team traveled to Walled Lake Northern for an LVC Double Dual vs the host Knights and the other visiting team from Waterford. The contest against Waterford was lopsided in favor of HVU, winning by a final score 109 to 45. The highlight of the meet was a must watch diving contest between Huron Valley's Alex Broadwater and Waterford's Alex Poulin, the defending state champion, that saw Broadwater take second place by a mere 2.60 points, 259.65 to 257.05. Against Walled Lake Northern, it was a full team effort, with all 12 athletes contributing to a narrow nail biting win over a Northern team with over twice as many athletes. Sophomore Brendan Marshall and senior Mason Brow each brought home double event wins and teamed up with Broadwater and junior Brock Nelson to win the 200 Free relay and freshmen Tommy Shaw and Nick Marinescu to win the 400 Free Relay. However the outcome of the meet came down to the B relay in the final event, where juniors Xander Snider, Rowan Enyeart and Skylar Jess-Isenegger kept the team in the mix for freshman Layton Armstrong to anchor the squad past Walled Lake's team and to a 3rd place finish and a meet win. The team moves to 3-0 in the LVC this season and hosts an out of conference matchup vs Notre Dame Prep This Thursday before they compete at the Oakland County Championships on Friday February 3rd and Saturday February 4th. Last Thursday, the Huron Valley United Boys Swim and Dive team went on the road to Walled Lake Central for its first LVC contest of the year vs Walled Lake United. The team won all 12 events en route to its first win of the season. Score: Huron Valley United 116 Walled Lake United 66 Senior Captains Alex Broadwater and Mason Brow won Diving, the 50 Free, the 200 Free and the 100 Free, respectively. Sophomore Brendan Marshall contributed wins and MISCA/Oakland County A cut performances in the 100 Fly and 100 Back. Freshman Layton Armstrong and Nick Marinescu won the 200 Individual Medley, 500 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke, respectively. The team moves to 1-0 in the Conference and 1-1 on the season entering a double dual this Thursday vs Walled Lake Northern and Waterford United @ Walled Lake Northern.

Team Finish 1. Hartland 2. Huron Valley United 3. North Farmington 4. Clarkston 5. Swartz Creek   This past weekend the Boys Swim and Dive team hosted Hartland, North Farmington, Clarkston and Swartz Creek for the 2023 Huron Valley Invite at Milford HS. The team had a great weekend in the pool and on the boards to finish second overall to a talented Hartland squad. Sophomore Brendan Marshall (200 Freestyle), Freshman Tommy Shaw (200 Freestyle), Senior Mason Brow (50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle), Junior Skylar Jess-Iseneggar (6 Dives), Junior Xander Snider (100 Backstroke), and Freshman  Layton Armstrong (100 Breaststroke) all collected event wins.   Freshman Nick Marinescu was one of the few double winners on the day, earning Freshman of the Meet honors after bringing home first place medals and personal bests in the 200 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle as well as leading off the 400 Freestyle Relay in a new personal best time.   Senior Alex Broadwater put on a show on the boards on Friday, winning the 11 Dive competition with a score of 440.80, to set a new team and meet record as well as the top score in Division 1 this season. Results from the Huron Valley United Boys Swim & Dive team's first meet earlier this month: Score HVU-57 Hartland- 129 Huron Valley United Boys Swim and Dive opened their season with an out of conference dual meet vs. Hartland HS. While the team competed throughout the meet, they ultimately fell short of a talented Hartland team to start the season. Even in the loss, there were a number of noteworthy performances. Sophomore Brendan Marshall placed second in the 200 Free and 1st in the 500 Free, achieving county qualifying times in both events. Senior diver Alex Broadwater added another event win on the evening with a personal best score that is currently the #1 ranked performance in the state. He carried his momentum from Diving into the pool leading off the 200 Free relay with a team best time of 24.78. Overall the team had 15 personal bests in its first meet and looks to continue to improve in its next competition, the Huron Valley Invitational, on January 6th and 7th, here they will host North Farmington, Hartland, Clarkston and Swartz Creek.
