Huron Valley United Girls Varsity Gymnastics competes at MHSAA State Meet; Elena Hale places 7th in all-around

The 2022-2023 Winter Sports season officially came to an end this past weekend, and the Huron Valley United Gymnastics team was in action til the very end. Lakeland hosted the MHSAA state meet on Friday and Saturday. The HVU team competed in the team competition on Friday night and placed 13th. On Saturday 5 individuals competed to be the best in the state. Milford senior, Megan Sclabassi placed 9th on bars in the D2 division with an 8.45. Lakeland senior, Ava Barwikowski placed 7th in D2 vault with a 9.15. LHS senior, Elena Hale placed 7th on on floor with a 9.35 and 7th all around with a 34.95. Congratulations goes out to Elena for being named the MHSGCJA Senior of the Year.

The Huron Valley United Gymnastics team had an amazing LVC Conference meet at Walled Lake Central on Saturday. The team took 1st place to win the LVC tournament and also win the LVC this season going undefeated. The team score of 137.9 was their highest team score of the season. Linden/Fenton/Lake Fenton came in second with a 134.6, Walled Lake Northern-127.125, Walled Lake Central/Western- 126.4, West Bloomfield- 126.050 and Waterford United with a 116.125. Individually they did awesome and took home many medals. Sophia Stankov, a MHS sophomore, took 6th on vault with an 8.6. MHS sophomore Kaitlynn Elkins took 7th on bars with an 8.025 and 8th on beam with a 7.850. MHS freshman Julia Witkos took 10th on beam with a 7.8. On floor, LHS junior Elaina Cotton took 7th with a season high score of 8.475. MHS junior Karli Bredernitz rocked the floor too with a season high 8.875. Three of the seniors had incredible days today and took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the all-around! MHS senior Megan Sclabassi was 10th on vault with an 8.5, 1st on bars with an 8.7, 3rd on beam withan 8.575 and 6th on floor with an 8.475. LHS senior Elena Hale was 2nd on vault with an 8.9, 4th on bars with an 8.1, 1st on beam with an 8.8, 2nd on floor with a 9.125 and 2nd all-around. LHS senior Ava Barwikowski was 1st on vault with a 9.1, 2nd on bars with an 8.3, 5th on beam with an 8.5, 1st on floor with a 9.325 and 1st all-around. The girls have been working hard and improving this season. Next up is the Regional meet on March 4th being hosted at Lakeland High School.

On Wednesday night, the Huron Valley United Gymnastics team beat Fraser at a dual meet. 133.5-132.525. Top scorer on vault was LHS senior Elena Hale with a 9.1. Top bar score was MHS senior Megan Sclabassi with a 8.6. Top beam score was LHS senior Ava Barwikowski with a 9.0, and top floor was Elena Hale with a 9.2. IA freshman, Kennedy Foote had a 8.7 on beam. The team travels to Livonia on Monday for the last regular season meet of the year. Later, the team will be hosting a MHSAA Regional competition here at Lakeland.

Last night, the Huron Valley United Gymnastics team beat both Walled Lake Northern and Walled Lake Central/Western on Tuesday night to go undefeated in the LVC this year. The team scores were HVU 135.5, WLCW-120.35 and WLN 121.225. Many gymnasts contributed to the team score. The team gets right back into action today with a meet against Birmingham.

The Huron Valley United Gymnastics team hosted the 10th annual Jeanne Caruss Memorial Invitational this past weekend at Lakeland High School. This is the biggest Invite in the state with 20 teams attending. Hartland High School came out with a strong performance and the victory. Huron Valley placed 11th among some of the best teams in the state. Individual winners included two LHS seniors, Ava Barwikowski and Elena Hale. Ava placed 6th all-around, 8th on bars, 5th on vault and 7th on floor. Elena placed 2nd on floor with a career high 9.55. The team is doing well this season and looking forward to a finishing strong. As a reminder, the MHSAA Regional competition and the State Finals Meet will be hosted by Lakeland.

Saturday, the Huron Valley United Gymnastics team competed against LVC rival LInden/Fenton/Lake Fenton. The team had an amazing meet coming away with their highest team score of the year so far, 137.85. It was also senior day and they all did amazing! Lakeland senior Elena Hale had the best meet of her high school career scoring a 9.15 on vault, 7.625 on bars, 9.225 on beam and a 9.375 on floor. Lakeland senior Ava Barwikowski kept up her high scores this year and scored a 9.0 on floor. Another senior from Lakeland, Ella Wright, was consistent again and scored an 8.55 on vault. Milford senior Megan Sclabassi did a near perfect vault and tied her highest bar score this year with an 8.7. The underclassmen contributed to that high team score too. Lakeland junior Elaina Cotton scored a 8.65 on vault, IA freshman Kennedy Foote scored a 8.525 on beam, Milford junior Karli Bredernitz scored a 8.65 on floor, and Milford freshman Julia Witkos scored an 8.675 on beam. It was a fun and great day for the team. Next weekend the team hosts 20 teams at the Jeanne Caruss Memorial Invitational at Lakeland.

Eagles Win: 134.88 - 130.58
Monday morning, the Huron Valley United Gymnastics team had a tri meet with Tecumseh and Cass City. HVU came out victorious with a score of 134.875. Cass City scored a 130.575 and Tecumseh was right behind them with a 130.25. Lakeland senior, Ava Barwikowski had an awesome meet, scoring in the 9.0's on vault and floor. Milford sophomore, Sophia Stankov had a season high 9.15 on vault. Busy week ahead as the team travels to Vassar on Thursday and take on LVC rivals LFLF on Saturday.

Eagles Win: 132.95 - 110.35
The Huron Valley United Gymnastics team had a tri-meet with two LVC teams (Waterford United and West Bloomfield) on Saturday.  The HVU team came out victorious with a team score of 132.95.  West Bloomfield scored a 110.35 and Waterford United 108.15.  The seniors led the way with Ava Barwikowski from Lakeland scoring season highs on vault 9.15 and floor with 9.2.  Elena Hale from LHS scored a 8.75 on both vault and floor and Megan Sclabassi from Milford  scored an 8.6 on vault and 8.725 on floor.  Lakeland senior Ella Wright had qualifying scores on all four events including an 8.25 on vault.  Many of our gymnasts scored qualifying scores on all events which are needed to qualify for the regional meet that LHS will host the first weekend in March. Next up is a tri meet with Tecumseh and Cass City on Jan. 16th

The Huron Valley United Gymnastics team had an amazing day at the Walled Lake Invite on Saturday. The team placed 2nd out of 16 teams and scored a season high of 135.975. They were narrowly edged out by a talented Livonia Red team. The team was led by its seniors including, Lakeland senior, Ava Barwikowski who finished 1st all-around, 2nd on vault, 7th on beam and 1st on floor. Another senior from Lakeland, Elena Hale, also had a great day finishing 4th all-around, 7th on vault, 7th on beam and 4th on floor. Milford senior Megan Sclabassi also placed on many events including 10th all-around, 10th on vault, 6th on bars an 6th on floor. We had a strong vault showing with 4 members placing including Milford sophomore Sophia Stankov who placed 10th. Lakeland sophomore, Mckenna Herman placed 10th on the floor. Rounding out our placing was Milford junior Karli Bredernitz with 6th on floor. 5 out of the top 10 spots on floor were HVU gymnasts. The team had a great day and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the season brings.

This past Friday, the Huron Valley United Gymnastics team placed 3rd at the Fowlerville Invite. Lakeland senior Elena Hale and Milford sophomore Sophia Stankov placed on vault. Milford senior Megan Sclabassi placed on bars and Hale also placed on floor. It was a great meet! Next up is the Walled Lake Invite next Saturday!

The Huron Valley United Gymnastics team narrowly edged out Fowlerville by .025 on Saturday afternoon. HVU scored a 133.475 and Fowlerville a 133.45. Top scorers for the HVU team were Lakeland senior Ava Barwikowski with a 8.95 on vault and floor. Milford freshman Julia Witkos scored a 7.8 on bars and 8.725 on beam. Milford senior Megan Sclabassi scored a 8.475 on bars and 8.775 on floor. Milford sophomore, Sophia Stankov scored a 8.5 on vault. The meet went very well and the team earned many regional qualifying scores. 10 of the 21 girls on the team are first year high school gymnasts so our team is fairly young. Next up is the Fowlerville Invite on Friday night
