Girls Varsity Cross Country competes in MHSAA State Finals

Eagles Lose: -
The Girls Cross Country team competed at the MHSAA State Finals this past Saturday at Michigan International Speedway. The girls were missing one runner, but finished the season strong. They placed 25th place in Division 1 in the state. Ava Walsh finished in 73rd place in 19:38. Trinity Mann and Madeline Augustyn ran all-time personal best times. Also running strong for the Eagles were Ava Alicandro, Alena Tiernan, Mia McDonald, and Kenzie Hendry. The ladies had a great season with a State Meet qualification and an Invitational win. Friday, the Girls Cross Country team competed in the MHSAA Regional Race held at Kensington Metropark. The Eagles finished in 3rd place, thereby earning the opportunity to compete in the MHSAA State Finals next weekend. Ava Walsh (8th) and Ava Alicandro (11th) led the Eagles. Alena Tiernan (20th), Natalie Joiner (25th), and Mia McDonald (32nd) were the additional runners who contributed to the team's score. Trinity Mann and Mackenzie Hendry were the additional runners for Lakeland. Lakeland now looks forward to returning to Michigan International Speedway for the State Finals next Saturday, November 5th. The Girls Cross Country team competed in the LVC Championship race last Thursday.  Ava Alicandro became  All-Conference (7th) and Lakeland's All-Time 6th fastest sophomore in a time of 19:24 for 3.1 miles. Ava Walsh missed All-Conference by just one place in 19th. Other great finishes were Mia McDonald (23rd), Natalie Joiner (26th), Alena Tiernan (27th), Trinity Mann (38th), and Mackenzie Hendry (40th). The girls finished 4th out of nine schools, narrowly missing 3rd. They avenged a previous dual meet loss to Walled Lake Western in the process.

Wednesday, the Girls Cross Country team defeated both Walled Lake Central (20-41) and Waterford Kettering (15-No Score). The girls finished the regular LVC season at 5-3 in dual meets.  The Eagles were led by Ava Walsh, Natalie Joiner, and Ava Alicandro.

Last Saturday, October 8th, the Girls Cross Country team placed 13th out of 32 teams at the Oakland County Championships. Varsity runners were Ava Walsh (22nd), Ava Alicandro, Alena Tiernan, Natalie Joiner, Trinity Mann, Kenzie Hendry, and Madeline Augustyn. Saturday, the Girls Cross Country team competed in the Jackson Invitational, an event that featured a number of the most competitive teams in the state. The Eagles placed 14th overall. Senior Ava Walsh paced the Eagles, finishing 27th overall with a time of 19:35.8.  Ava Alicandro (39th), Natalie Joiner (85th), Alena Tiernan (89th), and Mia McDonald (96th) were the other Eagles to contribute to the team's score. On Friday, the Girls Cross Country team participated in the first of two races held as part of the Jackson Invitational. This race featured the team's secondary roster of runners, essentially the JV crew.  Lakeland's runners earned a 6th place finish in the event. Sophomore Madeline Augustyn paced the Eagles, finishing 29th overall with a time of 23:21.7. Rina Lewis (34th), Taryn Marco (46th), Aubrey VanGoethem (47th), and Angela Cayax (54th) rounded out the scoring finishers for Lakeland. Tuesday, the Girls Cross Country team split a LVC dual meet, beating South Lyon East (23-35) and losing to Walled Lake Western (25-31). Top finishers for Lakeland were Ava Alicandro, Ava Walsh, Natalie Joiner, Mia McDonald, Alena Tiernan, Trinity Mann, and Makenzie Hendry.

This past Tuesday, the Girls Cross Country team opened up its LVC schedule with a race against Walled Lake Northern and South Lyon. While the Eagles fell to a strong Northern team, 21-39, they did defeat South Lyon, 24-31. The results move them to 1-1 in the LVC. Ava Alicandro paced the Eagles, finishing 3rd overall with a time of 20:14.1. Ava Walsh finished in 4th at 20:41.1. Last weekend, the Girls Cross Country team competed in the Mud Run in Charlevoix on Saturday, taking 1st place in the large school division. Senior Ava Walsh led the Eagles with a time of 20:45.88. Ava Alicandro was right behind her, crossing the line at 20:48.48. Natalie Joiner (21:22.64), Mia McDonald (21:26.86), and Alana Tiernan (22:21.32) rounded out the top 5 finishers for the Eagles. Tuesday, the Girls Cross Country team opened up its competitive season by participating in Mustang Invite hosted by Northville. The event consists of two races, one featuring student-athletes in 11th and 12th grade, and one featuring 9th and 10th grade runners. In the 11th-12th grade race, Lakeland finished 5th overall. In the 9th-10th grade race, the Eagles finished in a tie for 4th. Sophomore Ava Alicandro posted the fastest time of all Eagles, crossing the finish line at 21:26.0 (6th overall in her race). Senior Ava Walsh had the second fastest time (16th overall in her race) with a time of 21:47.0. Natalie Joiner, Mia McDonald, Alana Tiernan, and Trinity Mann were the next 4 fastest runners for Lakeland.
