WALLED LAKE NORTHERN HIGH SCHOOL: 1
The Lakeland Eagles enjoyed a big 6-1 win versus local rival Walled Lake Northern in a throwback game played on a chilly LIA Gray rink at 9 am on Saturday morning. Condensed scheduling forced the teams to the practice ice and both coaching staffs chuckled at their memories of coaching Mite hockey games on that same sheet in past years.
Once the puck dropped both teams got down to business with senior Owen Arnold looping one in from the point (assists to Jacob Lewis and Cam Slicker). Northern answered with a breakaway goal to bring the game to a tie at the end of one period.
Coach Ronayne said, "Northern is a rugged team and they can and will score goals if you don't play solid team D. We had a quick 12 hour turnaround from the night before and our guys were not moving their legs. We talked about that during the break."
The chalk talk worked as Lakeland scored two in the second period and didn't look back. Junior Fisher Christian nabbed a rebound goal on a point shot from sophomore Amy Palaian for her first point of the season. Cam Slicker added a goal (assist Matthew Zaremba).
The third period was all Lakeland with goals from Luke Weinberger, Nick Hrobsky, and Christian. Slicker helped on two more goals for three assists overall. Zaremba, Weinberger, Hal Schnell and Kyle Baker contributed as well.
Freshman goalie Paul Baker turned back 13 of 14 shots to garner his third win.
Eagles assistant coach Matt Busterna said of the game: "I'm glad I wore a hat."
