On Friday, April 16th, the Varsity Softball team swept a doubleheader against Lake Orion, winning both games on late inning offensive heroics.
In Game #1, the Eagles defeated the Dragons, 5-4. Alyssa Younker had an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Lakeland the lead. Ashlyn Dostal added 2 hits for the Eagles.
Summer Ambler earned the victory on the rubber for Lakeland Eagles Varsity. The righthander went five and a third innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out eight. Kaylee Philipon and Payton Grange entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.
In the final inning, right-fielder Campbell Sherrill made two nice catches, one a line-drive looking into the sun and the other a deep fly to the warning track, to preserve the win.
In Game #2, Lakeland was down big early but rallied to win the game in walk-off fashion, 14-13.
After making a big comeback to tie the game at 13, the Eagles won in the final-at-bat as Sherrill singled in the winning run.
Payton Grange led Lakeland Eagles Varsity to victory by driving in four runs. Grange went 2-for-3 at the plate, hitting a grand slam in the 3rd inning to account for her RBIs. Sophia Shaw also went yard late in the game.
In total, Lakeland pounded out 18 hits. Natalie Gizoni (4 hits), Yonker, Ambler, Grange, and Dostal all collected multiple hits for the Eagles.
Summer Ambler was credited with the victory for Lakeland Eagles Varsity. The righthander surrendered two runs on six hits over five innings, striking out six. Kaylee Philipon got the start on the mound.
