Varsity Football team scores in final seconds of game to defeat Milford in MHSAA playoff game; Eagles move on with 28-21 win

Last Friday night, the Varsity Football team provided an electric moment to remember, defeating Milford (for the 2nd week in a row) on essentially the last play of the game to win its MHSAA playoff opener, 28-21. Both teams scored early in the first quarter in a high scoring 12 minutes. During the next 2 quarters, Milford seemed to have the momentum, but the game remain tied at 14-14 going into the 4th quarter. Lakeland took the lead on a 30-yard TD run by Nolin Thompson, but Milford responded with 3:00 minutes, pulling even at 21-21. That's when Lakeland mounted the game-winning drive, culminated by a 27-yard TD scamper by Trevor Tschudin, a run that ended with one second left on the clock. This past Friday, the Varsity Football team concluded the regular season by defeating Milford, 14-7. With the victory, the Eagles earned a playoff spot, and as announced this weekend, we'll have a repeat event as Lakeland will again be hosting Milford this Friday in the opening round of the MHSAA playoffs. After scoring on a short field on its opening drive, Milford was held scoreless the rest of the way by Lakeland's defense. Then the Eagles' offense kicked into gear late in the 2nd half on touchdowns by Travis Tschudin and Carter Travis, the latter the culmination of a critical, time-consuming drive late in the 4th quarter. The Eagles even converted a 4th and 1 deep in Milford territory to keep the ball as long as possible. In the first game of the season, the Eagles had the special opportunity of playing in the Big House, the University of Michigan team's home field. On a hot and humid day, Lakeland showed some guts, enduring difficult conditions to defeat South Lyon East, 22-12. It was a game of big plays for the Eagles, highlighted by a pick-6 touchdown by Nolin Thompson and a blocked punt by Fisher Bedini that was recovered by Ryan Thompson for another touchdown.
