Girls Varsity Ski team finishes 7th at MHSAA State Finals

Game Date
Feb 24, 2020

The Girls Ski team competed in the State Finals along with qualifier Zach Massey from the Boys Ski team at Boyne Highlands on Monday. The weather was bluebird, sunshine, but the snow was soft and challenging at times with the warmer temps.

The Girls race started with slalom in the morning on South Challenger, which has a steep pitch at the top, and long run out at the bottom. It is the longest slalom course the kids face with times that are twice as long as what they ski at home. There were lots of falls across all teams and our girls had some struggles too. They managed to come away with four results for a score in slalom of 116 with freshman Molly Lynch taking 16th overall, senior Autumn Christensen finished in 38th, freshman Natalie Hoyer was 44th, and junior Brooke White had to hike on one run and did great on her second run put down our fourth scores and remain in the race. The Giant Slalom started after lunch on North Challenger, which is not as steep, but has terrain that has to be managed. The girls gave it their all, but struggled with some slips and one fall. Molly Lynch finished 31st, Brooke White came in 34th, senior Angela Salmeto took 42nd, and Autumn Christensen rounded out the top four with 50th. Senior Chloe Lynch also raced with the team. Their GS score was 116 for a total team score of 232 and 7th place of the 9 teams that qualified.

Coach Sue Wiberg expressed how very proud she was of these girls for how well they have worked as a team all season!! Though they did not have their best day of racing at the State Final, they still gave it their best shot and represented Lakeland with outstanding sportsmanship and teamwork!
