The Region 3 Ski Championship and qualifier for the State Final was Thursday at Alpine Valley. The Boys team raced, starting the morning with slalom. The boys struggled, but gave it their all, and senior Zach Massey qualified for States in slalom with a top ten finish and 6th place overall. Other top racers for the boys were junior Jack Percy in 25th, junior Tyson Lovejoy in 33rd and senior Brenden Ploucha in 38th. Senior Shane Herning and junior Austin Schneider also raced. The boys finished slalom in 6th place with 102 points.
Our athletes came out after lunch for the GS race and the boys again put everything in for the GS race, but suffered some falls, and ended up in 9th in GS with Zach Massey coming in 16th, Brenden Ploucha 27th, Tyson Lovejoy 39th, and freshman Camren Sloat in 54th.
The boys team fought hard all day and came out in 8th place, but again, Zach Massey will compete in the State Finals for the Slalom event. I am so proud of this team and their determination and efforts against a very tough field of teams and racers. They represented Lakeland very well and with first class sportsmanship! Looking forward to a great State Final meet with Zach and the girls team! GO EAGLES!!! -- Coach Sue Wiberg
