Thursday, January 23rd, the Boys Swim and Dive team hit the road again for their first LVC competition, besting the host Knights from Walled Lake Northern and the co-visitor Waterford United to start the season 2-0 in the conference. The boys overcame a nearly twice as large Northern team by executing their races to perfection- Winning all 11 events, while squeezing out a few 3rd and 4th place finishes to overcome the depth of the host squad.
Juniors Sam Campbell (Backstroke), Nick Marinescu (Breaststroke), Ralph Walter (Freestyle) along with freshman Thomas Kiebel (Butterfly) kicked off the meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay.
Junior Tommy Shaw took home the next event win, touching 1st in the 200 Freestyle (1:53.00) while also later going on to win the 100 Butterfly (56.07), both best times. Senior Captain Brendan Marshall added to the victory tally, taking home gold in the subsequent 200 Individual Medley (2:02.76) in a new best time while also touching the wall first in the 100 Breaststroke (1:04.07) again in a best time. Marinescu followed up his Medley relay performance with wins and Best times in the 50 Free (23.25) and 100 Free (53.03). Completing the individual event sweep was Campbell, who took home a win in the 500 Free before notching a new team record time in the 100 backstroke of 52.52.
Kiebel contributed key 3rd place finishes in the Individual medley (2:21.95) and 100 Breaststroke (1:11.22), while Walter took 5th in the 50 Freestyle (26.65) and 4th in the 100 Free (1:01.44), both best times.
Individual scoring for the meet was rounded out by freshman Noble Wollace (5th- 200 Free and 100 Breaststroke) senior Owen Lynar (5th 100 Butterfly and 500 Freestyle) and sophomore Michael Nowicki (5th 100 Backstroke)
With the individual events settled, it came down to the relays.
Shaw, Marshall, Walter and Marinescu took home the win in the 200 Freestyle relay, with a time of 1:34.55, improving the previous team best on the season by over two seconds.
Shaw, Marshall, Kiebel and Campbell stood behind the blocks for the final event of the day, the 400 Freestyle relay. Win the event, win the meet. The quartet posted a new season best by nearly 10 seconds to seal the victory, in a final time of 3:25.39.
The win against Northern completes a 4-year career sweep of the Knights for the senior class, and extends the team's dual meet streak on the season to 5 straight wins, while improving their overall record to 5 (W) and 1 (L).
The team travels to Walled Lake Central next Thursday for their next LVC dual meet before qualifying athletes travel to the Holland Aquatic Center for the MISCA Invitational.
