Saturday, February 22nd, the Varsity Hockey team began their state playoff push with a lopsided 7-2 win over Fenton/Linden this weekend. The Eagles had already met Fenton twice this season and knocked them about in both games. The third game began in a not-so-charming hole when the Griffins scored the first goal of the game off of a LHS defender's leg. 1-0 Fenton after one period.
Coach Ronayne: "There was no panic in our room. We outshot them 16-3 in the first period but they got their bounce. We felt good with the pressure we were applying."
The second period was all Lakeland beginning with a gritty Joel Slicker goal (Lucas Kintz, Ryan Danielson). Adam Trzcinski banged home the second goal (Nate Dell, Carter Sutton) on Lakeland's first powerplay advantage. Trzcinski drew the next penalty and Dell made short work of it - scoring just four seconds into the penalty. The Griffins seemed rooted to the ice while Dell danced through them to score the eventual game winner. Danielson padded the Eagles' lead late in the period when he corralled the puck off of a Slicker scramble. Danielson turned and fired the puck at the net and the Griff goalie had no chance thanks to junior Linkin Howell setting up shop directly in front of him. 4-1 after two.
The third period featured a few more goals: Scanlon unassisted, Sutton (Bryce Martin, Dell) and Zane Austin on a lovely pass from Killian Voorhies. 7-2 final.
Sophomore starting goalie Hunter Bennett was solid in the tune-up for Wednesday's 2/26 regional final vs Flint Powers. Game time is 6 pm at the Flint Iceland Arena (recently renamed to 810 Sports Complex). Their motto: "Flint area's premier Ice Hockey/Pickleball destination."
