Boys Varsity Ice Hockey defeats defending Division 3 State Champions Cranbrook; Eagles prevail, 3-2

On Wednesday, January 8th, the Varsity Hockey team traveled to Bloomfield Hills to take on the reigning Division 3 State Champion Cranbrook Cranes.
Lakeland kicked off the scoring when junior Austin Scanlon won a D zone face off that cleared to Captain Adam Trzcinski. Trzcinski head-manned the puck to junior Nate Dell, striding through the neutral zone. Dell drifted left as he entered the zone, creating all kinds of room for a hard skating Scanlon at the net. Scanlon caught Dell's pass, faked left but moved right, slipping the puck past a befuddled Crane goalie. 1-0 after one.
The teams traded powerplay goals in the second period. Lakeland's came courtesy of senior Joel Slicker eating a rough hit in the far corner. Fear not Slicker fans! Joel recovered and on the ensuing PP Trzcinski scored on a rebound from Captain Bryce Martin's point shot (Dell). 2-1 after two.
In the third, the Cranes tied the game at two. As the clock wound down under five minutes, the teams entered 'next goal wins' scenario. With the clock ticking to three minutes, Martin tipped the puck up to Scanlon deep in the Eagles' zone. Scanlon skated the puck 180 feet while Dell drove the net, dragging two Cranes with him. Dell's drive left Trzcinski in the slot to convert Scanlon's pass into an almost walk-off goal. Goaltender Hunter Bennett would outplay his Crane counterpart stopping 23 of 25 shots. 3-2 Eagles final.
Coach Ronayne: "We passed the test tonight. Cranbrook is a perennial contender and to go toe-to-toe with them is a great accomplishment for our boys. We played team defense to stifle their top guys. This is a good building block in our process."
