Boys Varsity Ice Hockey celebrates Senior Night with a 7-2 victory over Lake Orion

Game Date
Feb 4, 2022
Score
EAGLES: 7
LAKE ORION HIGH SCHOOL: 2

Friday was Senior Night at the LIA in honor of the Varsity Hockey team's Class of 2022. A 20 minute pregame ceremony paid tribute to the six Seniors and their families. Thank you to all Eagle parent volunteers for putting together a heart warming event.

The opposing Lake Orion Dragons took in the pre-game festivities and came out thumping to notch the first goal of the night. But the Eagles were not content to wait for more Lake Orion tallies; instead Fisher Christian ripped a point shot 3 seconds into the Eagles first power-play of the night. The goal was set up by Luke Weinberger’s squeaky clean face off to Kyle Baker who found Fisher on the left point. Junior Nate Behmlander scored the second goal of the period on a nice wrister again set up from Baker and junior Caleb Kish. The Dragons scored their final goal of the night in the waning seconds of the first period for a 2-2 tie at the break.

Coach McElwee on the late period goal allowed: "We can't do that."

Weinberger picked up the team just 30 seconds into the 2nd by driving home a south-of-the-goal-line backdoor pass from a very, very patient Christian (Dylan Huebner). Later in the second, Spencer Pickett moved the puck from the corner to junior Elliot Smith who promptly gave it right back to Pickett. Pickett fired the hot potato over a stunned LO goaltender’s shoulder to make it 4-2. The Eagles added to their lead thanks to Pickett taking a Dragon stick to the face. The odd man advantage allowed Kyle Baker to control the puck into the Lake Orion zone where he found Weinberger who slid the puck to Christian who deftly passed it back to Baker moving through the slot where he backhanded the puck into the net to take the Eagles into the intermission up by three goals.

Up 5-2 in the third period the Eagles faithful were treated to an evening performance of the Jason Slicker Show. Slicker put up a furious blue paint defense as he turned back all 21 shots on goal in the period. Lake Orion had multiple point blank chances but Slicker was having none of it. Somehow the Eagles managed two more goals on just nine shots. Kyle Baker picked up his second with a record setting 200 foot empty net goal and Robbie Lewis made no mistake from the slot burying a Brennan Grant centering pass.

Coach Ronayne on the win: "Tonight may have been our most complete game as a team. Lake Orion is a very good program and we knew we were in for some tough sledding. Everyone contributed and Jason gave us what we needed in the third for the win. That it was Senior Night made it all the more special."
