Friday night, the Varsity Hockey team met in-district rivals Milford head-on in front of a spirited packed house at the LIA. Led by the fabulous Baker brothers (goalie Paul and d-man Kyle) Lakeland netted seven goals while Baker played inspired goaltending to garner his second shutout of the year.

Junior Luke Weinberger quieted the huge Maverick crowd scoring his first of three goals just 22 seconds into the game. Senior Fisher Christian set up a Kyle Sierota goal halfway through the first period to build a two goal lead. Shots on net were even at 12 apiece after one.

Coach Ronayne on the opening stanza: “We were happy to go into the second up two goals. Milford is a well coached, skilled team and we know how dangerous their scorers are. I think we had like seven blocked shots and Paul was a rock for us in net. We went into the 2nd with a 0-0 mindset.”

The Eagles came out flying in the second period putting up four goals in total. Kyle Baker took a pass from Christian end-to-end snapping a quick shot from the left circle that handcuffed Mav goalie Cooper Langley and dropped in for the score. Weinberger snipped his second on a monster backhand thanks to Junior Regan Voorhies tough corner work and centering pass. Just 90 seconds later on his way to a five point night Christian snuck behind an unaware Maverick defenseman, stole the puck and beat Langley low to make it 5-0. Weinberger finished off his hattrick by scoring a powerplay rebound off of a Christian one timer (Baker).

Senior Dylan “Hubs” Huebner finished off the scoring in the third period (Christian and Sierota).

Captain Kyle Baker on how the large student section’s energy fueled the team: “It ultimately allows us to play to our full potential. Just knowing your school is right there with you the whole game is a feeling like no other.”
