The Varsity Hockey team made it three wins in a row on Saturday with a decisive 9-3 victory over in-rink rival WLCWU. In a repeat of their first two games, the Eagles were in a tight battle for much of the game until putting together a scoring flurry to take command. The game featured a couple of 5 min power plays for each team, another four-goal effort by sophomore Luke Weinberger and a six-point night for captain Cam Slicker (2 goals 4 assists).
Lakeland took an early lead at the 4:42 mark into the game on a nifty goal by Slicker served up by sophomore Jacob Lewis. WLCWU answered with their first goal just 90 seconds later. Lewis netted his lone goal of the night with under 2 minutes to go in the 1st with help from juniors Spencer Pickett and Caden Pierson.
The teams continued their back and forth battle in the 2nd period until junior Fisher Christian put the Eagles up for good with a rifling bar down shot from just under WLCWU's blue line. The Eagles built on their lead with goals from Nick Hrobsky and two goals from Weinberger. In the third period Slicker and Weinberger finished the scoring with assists going to Dylan Huebner and Kyle Sierota.
Head coach Tim Ronayne was happy with the win and said, "We knew we were in for a battle tonight. Coach McMahon and his staff keep improving their guys year after year. We were fortunate to have a few goals bounce in off skates during net scrambles and were able to take advantage of that for the win. I like the way we held on to our lead in the third period and (goalie) Jason Slicker made some huge saves against their top guys."
Next up for the Eagles on Wednesday 2/17: Walled Lake Western
