Girls Junior Varsity Basketball uses 11-0 run to close game in 28-22 win over Saint Catherine of Siena Academy

Monday, February 3rd, the Girls JV Basketball team defeated St. Catherine of Siena Academy, 28-22. Both teams started out applying full court pressure, Lakeland switching between ¾ court zone and full court man and St. Catherine utilizing a ¾ court 1-3-1 zone. Both teams were able to generate turnovers but neither team could really capitalize in the first quarter with Lakeland taking a 6-5 lead. The Stars took an early lead in the second quarter, but the Eagles responded by attacking the Stars’ 2-3 zone defense getting to the free throw line 10 times. Lakeland’s 5 made free throws led to a 11-10 lead at the half. The third quarter was more of the same with each team scoring 6 points allowing Lakeland to cling to a one-point lead. The Stars’ Jane Janda scored 6 points early in the fourth quarter fueling a 5-point lead which caused the Eagles to take a timeout with 4:30 remaining in the game. After the timeout Lakeland returned to what was successful in the second quarter: attacking the basket. Morgan Dial and Sammy McDonald made 2 free throws each while Alyssa Goldman scored 7 going 3/4 from the line as Lakeland closed out the game on an 11-0 run. The Eagles’ ability to make free throws was instrumental in pulling out the 28-22 win.
Scoring Leaders: Alyssa Goldman led with 16 points, Morgan Dial, Lily Wang, Sammy McDonald, Melinda Wing, Melanie Hudspeth, and Maddie Miles contributed 2 points each.
Lakeland did a good job of getting to the FT Line: (Lakeland: 14/22, 64%. St. Cats: 6/12, 50%)
Lakeland improves to 11-4, 7-3 in the conference.
