The Huron Valley United Girls Swim & Dive team walked into Lake Orion High School on Thursday, August 29th to start its season in a way it never has before: Ranked. Building off a 9th place state finals finish last season, the team was ranked 8th in Division 1 by MISCA on the first top-10 ranking by a Swim and Dive team in district history.
And the 8th-ranked team in the state lived up to the ranking in its first meet, winning 10 of 12 events and beating a talented Lake Orion team 112 to 74.
Senior captain Elle Dameworth swam 4 state qualifying times, posting the #1 time in Division 1 in the 200 Freestyle (1:58.13), the #4 time in the 100 Fly (59.86) and the #3 time in the 100 Freestyle leading off the 400 Freestyle Relay. Sophomore Annabelle Thompson (200 IM), senior captain Mya Hutchinson (500 Free) and junior Lola Beer (Diving) all produced top 10 times in their respective events as well.
Joining Dameworth and Thompson on the 200 Medley relay were junior Amelie Strickfaden and senior Coral Hebert, who swam a state qualifying mark of 1:54.52, which ranks them 4th in the state.
Thompson, Hebert and Hutchinson teamed up with senior Brooke Stec to win the 200 Freestyle relay in another state qualifying 1:43.81, which ranks 5th in D1 on the young season.
To close out the meet, Dameworth and Hutchinson were joined by junior Nora Spangler and freshman Maddy Kalinowski, winning the 400 Freestyle relay in 3:45.62, 6th ranked in the state so far.
Spangler (100 Fr / 100 Bk) , Strickfaden (200 IM / 500 Fr), Hebert (50 Fr / 100 Fr), Stec (50 Fr /100 Fr) and Kalinowski (50 Fr / 100 Fly) all also achieved county qualifying marks individually.
In the Diving competition, Leah Huntoon and Kennedy Foote also earned Oakland County qualifying scores.
The team returns home on Thursday 9/5 to host Pinckney and Ann Arbor Greenhills in a double dual.
