Huron Valley United Girls Swim & Dive team caps fantastic season by finishing 9th at the MHSAA State Finals

Game Date
Nov 18, 2023

On Friday 11/17 and Saturday 11/18 the Girls Swim and Dive team traveled to Eastern Michigan University to cap off the Fall Sports season in the Huron Valley School District, and cap it off they did, putting together one great performance after another en route to finishing 9th overall at the State Championships.

Kicking off the prelim session on Friday was the 200 Medley Relay team of sophomore Nora Spangler, freshman Annabelle Thompson, sophomore Amelie Strickfaden, and junior Brooke Stec, who swam a best time of 1:53.74, the 18th fastest time in the event.

Along with Spangler, Thompson and Strickfaden, sophomore diver Kennedy Foote made her state meet debut, competing in the preliminary round of the diving competition, where she placed 33rd.

Thompson followed up her medley relay performance by qualifying for finals in the 100 Freestyle where she medaled with a 10th place finish.

Junior Mya Hutchinson also won a medal with her 12th place finish in the 200 Freestyle while also swimming a personal best in the prelims of the 100 Freestyle.

Sophomore Diver Lola Beer improved on her 14th place finish in 2022, moving up to 11th while improving her score by 30 points!

Junior Elle Dameworth put together a pair of medal worthy performances, placing 9th in the finals of the 100 Fly and tying for 6th in the 200 Freestyle, both with personal best and team record times. For her efforts in the 200 Free, Elle was recognized with First team All State Honors.

Building off their individual swims, Dameworth, Thompson and Hutchinson were joined by junior Coral Hebert, who placed 25th in the 50 Freestyle, to swim the 200 Freestyle relay. The foursome set new team records in prelims and finals en route to a 4th place finish and First Team All State recognition. Dameworth also produced a new team record in the 50 free on the lead leg of the relay. Their time of 1:38.26 makes them the fastest 200 Freestyle relay team in district history.

Closing out the meet, those four were back at it again with Dameworth, Hebert, Thompson and Hutchinson again racing to team records in prelims and finals in the relay as well as on the lead off leg on both days. Stopping the clock with a time of 3:34.63, the team placed 5th overall, again earning 1st Team All State Honors.

The team tied the most ever individual medalists at a state finals in district history with four, becoming the first team with two 1st Team All State Relays at the same meet. Over the course of the season, new team records in 12 of 13 events this year a total of 29 times, with 9 of those records coming at the State Championships. With their 9th place finish, the 2023 Girls Swim and Dive team became the 3rd highest finishing team ever at the state finals, following only a pair of 7th place finishes 16 years ago in 2006 and 2007, and concluded the most successful top to bottom Swim and Dive season in Huron Valley School district history.
