Boys Varsity Tennis wins LVC Tournament, securing two trophies for Lakeland HS School

Game Date
Oct 2, 2021

On Saturday, the Boys Varsity Tennis team participated in the annual end of season LVC Conference Tournament. The tournament allows all 8 teams to participate in a "lose and done" tournament match format. Seeds were established earlier in the week, with several of our flights earning a 1 or 2 seed.

The 9 flights were divided up between 3 sites: Lakeland, WLN and WLC. Lakeland players came knowing this was going to be a challenging day. The players knew that their focus, aggressive play, and fast footwork would be a necessity to bring home the trophy. Lakeland players were quoted saying "our opponents have improved greatly over the season and we had to bring our "A" game today."

And, there was no doubt, the Lakeland players brought it! Lakeland won the team trophy with total points of 23, with the 2nd place team earning 14 points. Earning individual flight medals were the following:

2S - Noah Weinberger, #1 seed, 1st place/All Conference

3S - Elijah Parsons, #1 seed, 1st place/All Conference

4S - Logan Hayes, #2 seed, 2nd place/All Conference

1D - Will Dungan/Caiden Carlson, #1 seed, 1st place/All Conference

2D - Nick Broome/Joey Swartz, 1st place/All Conference

3D - Beau Krawczyk/Hector Benetiz, #1 seed, 1st place/All Conference

4D - Nick Daniel/Ajay Bikki, #1 seed, 1st place/All Conference

5D - Corey Sanderson/Alex Li, 1st place/All Conference

Special shout out to Cole Bromley who subbed in at 1 singles and drew the #1 seed first round. He played a very tough competitor who will be going to states. Cole hustled and forced his opponent to work hard for the win. In addition, a shout out to Corey Sanderson and Alex Li for stepping in at 5 doubles. They drew the #1 seed in the first round as well and were down 5-1 in the first set, when they came back and won the next 6 games to take the first set 7-5. They again found their way down 4-2 in the second set, and proceeded to win the next 4 games to win the second set 6-2. Thanks to Cole, Corey and Alex for being great teammates and playing to the end!

Across the board, the players were competitive, aggressive, and focused in their play today. The doubles teams did a great job communicating with each other and being aggressive at the net with their put-away volleys and overheads. The singles players kept their focus, had incredible serve accuracy, and moved their opponents around the court.

Winning the tournament today allowed Lakeland to grab both the Conference season title trophy and the Conference Tournament trophy today. Congratulations to all the boys on the team, including JV, who helped grab both of these outstanding wins this week!!! Tennis has always been a team effort and it has never been more evident than this season!

Next up, a dual match versus Avondale on Monday, October 4. Regionals follow on Thursday, October 7 at Fenton and Holly High Schools!
