Boys Soccer (Varsity) Week 8 Update
Wednesday Oct 9th - Game #15 Districts at North Farmington
Going back to Game 3 of the season, the Eagles faced a strong North Farmington team and lost 5-1. The boys showed up to play hard and seemed to surprise the Warriors with intensity and their new formation's high press. The game had several chances for both sides as the teams searched for weaknesses and opportunities. Several Eagle shots went off the post or just wide of the goal. North Farmington got on the board first with a long ball down the right side that opened the wing and caught the defense unprepared. But the Eagles kept their composure as #20 Zach Dobrin got into free space alone in his right corner with nineteen minutes left in the first half. He lofted a cross back into the center of the field and dropped it into the back of the net over the Warrior goalie; Taking the 1-1 tie into halftime.
The Eagles came out of halftime with the same intensity and quickly took advantage of their opportunities. Just four minutes into the second half, #7 Jacob Dobrin sailed a cross from the right midfield into the Warrior goal box where #14 Thomas White settled the pass and beat the diving goalie to take the 2-1 lead. The game continued to intensity and several yellow cards were handed out, mostly to the home team. North Farmington was able to tie the game with nineteen minutes remaining on a long line drive shot from 40 yards out. But since this was a District game, it would not end in a tie. The teams played two more 10 minutes periods of extra time, but neither team was able to break the tie.
In the end, the rules require a penalty shootout to determine the winner. The teams went back and forth taking their shots at the opposing goalies from 12 yards out. #1 Jay Hensley was first up for the Eagles and he calmly scored. Next up, #3 Ian Waldman also placed his shot into the back of the net. Still even, #20 Zach Dobrin put his shot in the upper corner out of reach from the Warrior goalie. In goal, Jay Hensley nearly made a diving save that just had too much pace to stop. #10 Gabe Wright took the fourth PK and scored comfortably. Still tied, the fifth attempt came from #14 Thomas White who's hard shot into the corner also beat the diving Warrior goalie. Onto the next five from each team and the Warriors converted their 6th shot, but unfortunately the Eagles did not.
A devastating way to end the season, but it showed tremendous improvement from the first three games to the last three games.
The Eagles end the season with their heads held high after growth and effort dominated the season from start to finish. They will celebrate with their annual banquet the first week in November.
