Tuesday, January 20th, the Huron Valley United Hockey team defeated Fenton, 9-1. However, the win was a secondary highlight as a 45-year-old career scoring record was broken by Lakeland senior Austin Scanlon.
Scanlon scored the 4th goal of the game, and in doing so, surpassed the 158 point total accumulated by Lakeland Athletics Hall of Famer Tom Attard during his 4-year career which concluded in 1981. Scanlon, a 4-year varsity player himself, added two more assists, improving the new record to 161 points (56 goals and 105 assists).
The record breaking goal was a textbook Scanlon goal as he picked up a loose puck in the offensive zone, controlled it moving left to right in the high slot and then fired a quick shot over the goalie's blocker and off the inside post for the goal.
Head coach Tim Ronayne: "We had to work to convince Austin and his family to join us as a freshman. Thankfully they made the right decision and Austin is in the record books with at least 10 more games to go."
The Eagles' (and 25/26 Titans') record with Scanlon on board is a robust 77-20-0-1.
Ronayne: “We've been very good for several years and Austin is a big part of why that is. I think his record is going to stand for quite some time. A once in a lifetime achievement for sure.”
