Friday January 23, the Girls Junior Varsity Basketball team played one of their best game of the year in a 21-19 loss at South Lyon.
The Eagles started out aggressively on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. Lakeland was able to get 3 early driving baskets by Annika Chinavare and Jaylyn Rhines in the half court. The Eagles good team defense and rebounding also led to Morgan Ross netting four points in transition. This solid play by Lakeland allowed them to take a 10-7 lead after one quarter. In the second quarter The Eagles played very sound fundamental defense, ran the floor well and had several good shots go in and out in the quarter. The Lions we able to hit one three point shot early and one late in the quarter to take a 13-10 lead into halftime. Lakeland owned the third quarter from an energy / effort standpoint. The Eagles caused turnovers, were constantly on the floor for loose balls and were able to score via a Ross fast break layup and two jumpers by Rhines and Chinavare. South Lyon was able to hit a 17’ bank shot at the buzzer to maintain a two-point lead 18-16. Haley Hewitt hit a fast break layup, and Annika Chinavare made a free throw with 4:00 minutes remaining to take a one-point lead. The Lions responded with an offensive put back right away to regain the lead. Down two points with 4 seconds to go, the Eagles executed a sideline inbounds play and got a fantastic 3-point look by Ross that rimmed out at the buzzer. This was the Eagles’ best effort of the year despite the loss.
