Tuesday, January 20th, the Girls Junior Varsity Basketball team earned a comeback win vs. Walled Lake Western, 22-20.
The Eagles took a quick 4-0 lead on a Haley Hewitt right-handed layup and a Morgan Ross fast break left-handed layup. The Warriors closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run to take the lead 6-4 after one quarter. Scholastica Usen started the second quarter off with a nice left-handed drive and score. This would be all the points the Eagles could muster in the quarter despite seven free throw attempts. Walled Lake Western went on another 5-0 run to take a 11-6 lead at the half. The third quarter started off slimier to the first half with the Warriors extending their lead to 16-7 with 3:00 to go. From this point forward the Eagles went to a full court man press leading to three points to close the quarter out by Annika Chinavare cutting the lead to 16-10. Lakeland’s defensive pressure continued to generate turnovers in the fourth quarter, limiting the Warriors to only a couple of good scoring chances. Six points from Jaylyn Rhines tied the game with just over 3 minutes remaining. The Warriors we able to get a jumper and two free throws to go back up 4 with 2:20 left in the game. The Eagles, however, came back with a Rhines floater and Chinavare three pointer with 1:25 to take the lead for good. Lakeland was very gritty as a team completing the comeback for the win 22-20.
