WALLED LAKE NORTHERN HIGH SCHOOL: 21
Tuesday, January 13th, the Girls JV Basketball team wrapped up an early season homestand with a 21-13 loss to the Knights of Walled Lake Northern.
The Knights were pretty much forced to play a 2-3 zone as they only had 5 players available for the game. This zone created issues for the Eagles who were unable to score in the first half despite trying several different offensive strategies. The Knights, even though turning the ball over frequently, were able to convert on their opportunities, jumping out to a 13-point lead at the half. The Eagles came out of halftime with great energy. Jaylyn Rhines was able to convert on a three-pointer and a layup while Payton Gignac contributed a free throw to get Lakeland on the scoreboard. The Eagles' defense was able to keep the Knights from making a field goal, but they were able to go a perfect 4:4 from the line to maintain a 17-6 lead after three quarters. Lakeland created a frenetic pace in the fourth quarter with their press trying to get back into the game. Annika Chinavare converted on three shots for 6 points but two timely scores from the Knights were able to keep the Eagles from coming all the way back. Despite a great effort in the second half, Lakeland was unable to overcome the slow start in the first half.
Scoring Leaders: Annika Chinavare (6), Jaylyn Rhines (5), Payton Gignac (2)
Lakeland falls to 2-6 and 1-2 in conference.
