Wednesday, December 10, the Girls Junior Varsity Basketball team opened the home portion of the schedule winning an overtime thriller vs Stoney Creek, 40-38.  

The Eagles came out and matched the energy of the Cougars from the start.  The Eagles were a little too aggressive with their hands defensively allowing Stoney Creek to get into the bonus early where they made 4/11 free throws.  Jaylyn Rhines and Peyton Gignac both scored in the first quarter on nice driving layups to keep the Eagles close, down 5-11 at the end of the quarter.  The second quarter’s energy was fully controlled by Lakeland.  Full court pressure, and hustle to all lose balls limited the Cougars offensive opportunities.  Annika Chinavare had a big quarter offensively scoring in the paint, from beyond the arc and at the free throw line pulling the Eagles within two at the half 14-16.   The third quarter was up and down with neither team able to score from the field, each with a single field goal – Lakeland’s scored by Haley Hewitt.  Both teams went to the line a lot shooting a combined 8/21 in the quarter where the Cougars extended their lead 19-23.  The fourth quarter was up and down basketball with both teams scoring form the field.  Lakeland’s 14-point outburst was fueled by a pair of three-point shots by Chinavare and Peyton Foote.  Rhines, and Scholastica Usen also contributed with points in the paint to force the game into overtime (33-33).  The extra period went back and forth with Lake Orion taking the lead right away with a three-pointer.  Lakeland came back with four points with a Chinavare steal and two field goals by Hayden Pawlak.  After two free throws by the Cougars, Pawlak stole an outlet pass and hit a short jumper to put the Eagles up for good.  A very hard-fought win for the first win of the year for this young Eagles team.
