Huron Valley United Girls Swim & Dive team wins LVC Conference Championship

Game Date
Nov 6, 2021

The Huron Valley United Girls Swim and Dive completed its first regular season at the Lakes Valley Conference championships in historic fashion, in multiple facets. After four straight seasons where South Lyon brought home the trophy, HVU not only broke that streak with their victory but also became the first swim team in the history of Huron Valley Schools to win a conference championship, boys or girls.

This achievement was built around the team as a whole, as 37 of the 40 varsity entries ended up scoring points, with 22 in "A" finals and 15 in "B" finals. The team performed well in prelims to put themselves in a position to be successful in finals and then showed up Saturday with a multitude of personal best performances.

Freshman Lauren McCaul won the 200 IM with a new personal best and team record time, and joined Senior Paxton Moore, Freshman Elle Dameworth and Junior Karolina Spiewak as conference champions in the 400 Freestyle relay with a state qualifying time and the 3rd fastest performance in conference history. Dameworth also achieved a state qualifying time in the 100 freestyle in the prelims of that relay.

Freshman Coral Hebert and Junior Mallory Armstrong joined McCaul and Dameworth as conference runners up in the 200 Freestyle relay, where they lowered their previous team record and again dipped under the state qualifying mark.

Senior Savannah Kolb swam a personal best time on the freestyle leg of the B medley Relay for her final swim while Senior Emily Dexter posted personal bests in both the 50 Free and 100 butterfly to place in both events despite a shoulder injury that kept her sidelined for the last month. Senior Jessica Duff grabbed a pair of 10th place finishes in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle with personal best swims, dropping 8 seconds and 18 seconds respectively, while also swimming a PR in the 50 freestyle. Senior Anna Malik took bronze in the 500 Freestyle after swimming a season best time in the prelim while swimming a personal best leading off the medley relay in the 50 back in finals. Senior Gracie Smetana swam 2 season bests in the 100 Butterfly and 100 Breaststroke prelims to move into the "A" finals on Saturday, despite not being ranked in the top 8 in either event. Senior Paxton Moore took home a silver for a runner up finish and season best in the 200 freestyle and a bronze for her efforts in the 100 freestyle to go with her aforementioned 400 freestyle relay gold where she swam a personal best as the leadoff swimmer.
