LHS Eagles varsity hockey brought their record to a perfect 7-0 on the season during a nightcap game on Saturday.   The Eagles held on with both talons in their second game of the day and third in 18 hours to win a closely contested battle (4-3) against a talented Bloomfield Hills High School squad.

The game went down to the wire when senior Matthew Zaremba was called on a questionable delay of game penalty as he protected the puck in the waning seconds of the game.   But thanks to Luke Weinberger's empty net insurance goal (his third of the night) the Eagles were able to pull out a 3rd win for the weekend.

Weinberger scored the lone goal of the first period with yet another assist from team leading Cam Slicker (18 on the season) and captain Nick Hrobsky. The teams traded baskets in the 2nd when Christian Fisher (Jacob Lewis and Spencer Pickett) continued his three game scoring streak with under 40 seconds to go in the period.

Weinberger put the Eagles up by two but the Hawks stormed back to keep the game tight when they pulled their goalie for an early six on five skater advantage with 3 minutes and change to go.   Weinberger made them pay when they next pulled the tender fearlessly scoring from half ice.

Bloomfield scored with approximately 29 seconds remaining to make it 4-3.  Assistant coach Matt McElwee on the Eagles' late game heroics "Bergs just finds the net.  It is innate for him.  And we needed that goal when the refs called Z for the delay.  I think he was just too effective controlling the puck.  The Hawks had three players moving the scrum but Matthew just kept kicking it along the boards."

Jason Slicker took care of business during the five second 6-4 powerplay for his second win in 24 hours.

Eagles will recover in the week ahead as they prepare to travel to Royal Oak and meet M-1 United on Friday 2/26.
